For my final project I chose to make the theme strange portraits. So basically it’s the things we wouldn’t usually see in a portrait. Whether it’s a weird expression, face or attire, I wanted it to be new and different. I photographed a maid and her second cousin who works as a hairdresser for veiled women only. The housemaid was very insecure about her job, and age actually and the fact that her teeth had just fallen of, so I thought why not glorify that and make her think differently by taking a couple of shots.
The other one was actually the hardest as she refused to take pictures at first, but since she had the “nikab” on it seemed more appealing to me the more she refused. I explained to her that after the shots have been taken if she did not like them I would simply delete. As she got more comfortable in front of the camera, I felt like the portraits showed so much meaning even though nothing actually showed but her eyes.
